UAE Flag Day 2026: Date, 11 am Flag Raising and Whether It Is a Holiday

7 Min Read

UAE Flag Day falls on Tuesday 3 November 2026. It is not a public holiday, so offices and schools run as usual, according to Khaleej Times. Flag-raising ceremonies are traditionally held at 11 am, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has called on citizens and residents to take part.

On 3 November 2026 we read Khaleej Times on Flag Day 2026, which it published on 28 October and updated on 2 November. We also read Gulf News on the history and flag rules, updated on 29 October. We could not open a government page for the 2026 programme, and that gap is listed at the end.

Date and time

Flag Day is observed every year on 3 November, and in 2026 that is a Tuesday. The ceremonies are traditionally held at 11 am, so a workplace or school that takes part will usually plan its event for the late morning. Individual schools and workplaces set their own programmes.

Is Flag Day a public holiday?

No. Khaleej Times says Flag Day is not an official public holiday and that schools are expected to operate as usual on Tuesday 3 November. Nothing in the reports we read suggests a day off for private-sector staff either.

The next real break is National Day in December. Our UAE National Day 2026 guide tracks the official dates and the holiday announcement, and our UAE public holidays guide lists the dates for the full year.

What happens on the day

The celebrations vary between institutions, Khaleej Times says. Schools may hold flag-raising ceremonies, assemblies and activities, so parents should check the announcements their own school has sent.

Some offices put their flags up a day early. A poster on r/askdubai described the scene on 2 November, and one reply said they were getting ready for Flag Day the next day.

โ€œA wonderful sight this morning! ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ช So good to see UAE flags proudly displayed all across our office building. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ชโ€

That is one post from one building, not a count of how many workplaces take part. We found no list of public events for 2026, and the government pages that might carry one did not open.

Where Flag Day comes from

Flag Day marks the anniversary of the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan becoming UAE President in 2004, Gulf News says. It was first celebrated in 2013. Khaleej Times credits Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid with launching the initiative that year, while the Gulf News article does not name who started it.

The flag itself was first raised on 2 December 1971 by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Gulf News reports. Abdullah Al Maeena designed it. The meaning of its four colours comes next.

What the four colours mean

Gulf News gives one meaning for each colour of the flag. The colours were inspired by a line of verse that says white are our acts, green our fields, black our battles and red our swords.

  • Red: courage and sacrifice.
  • Green: prosperity and growth.
  • White: peace and honesty.
  • Black: strength and determination.

Rules for flying the flag

Gulf News summarises the UAE flag guidelines from the Cabinet. If you plan to put a flag up at home or at work, a few habits cover most of them.

  • Keep the flag clean and ironed, and replace one that is torn, faded or discoloured.
  • Check it for damage or tangles before raising it, and again after storms or harsh weather.
  • When it is not on display, fold it neatly and store it in a designated flag box.
  • Dispose of a worn-out flag respectfully, by folding and storing it or by cutting it so it no longer looks like the flag. Burning is prohibited under the guidelines for environmental reasons.

Gulf News also says that lowering the flag in contempt, or tearing or damaging it in an insulting way, is a criminal offence under Article 3 of Federal Decree Law No. 13 of 2019. The article does not state a fine or a prison term.

What we could not confirm

Four points stayed open after our reading, and we left them out of the answers above rather than guess at them.

  • A government page for the 2026 programme. The UAE government portal link we tried returned a not-found error, and a ministry page would not load.
  • Whether public ceremonies or events are planned in any emirate.
  • The exact time the Vice President asked for in 2026. Khaleej Times says only that ceremonies are traditionally at 11 am.
  • Whether private companies are expected to hold ceremonies. The reports we read did not say.
