What Is Salah?

Salah is an Islamic ritual of prayer. We muslims do it five times during the day. It is a time to communicate with Allah, our God. We turn towards Mecca and perform our actions. We choose holy verses from the Quran. Salah helps us remember Allah and stay on the correct path. It’s one of the Five Pillars of Islam, which are our main duties.

The Five Daily Prayers

The five daily prayers in Islam are:

  1. Fajr: Morning prayer, before sunrise.
  2. Zuhr: Noon prayer, just over midday.
  3. Asr: Afternoon prayer, in the late afternoon.
  4. Maghrib: Western prayer, just after sunset.
  5. Isha: Night prayer, after darkness has fallen.

The Islamic Call to Prayer

Azaan, or Adhan, is a ritual call to prayer five times from the mosque. It thus announces prayer time to the Muslims around the globe. The muezzin (caller) recites the following Arabic words:

  • Allah is the Greatest
  • There is no god but Allah
  • Muhammad is Allah’s Messenger
  • Come to prayer
  • Come to success

The Azaan is the sign of faith for the believers, also it shifts their mind to worship. It is a part of the daily prayers for Muslims, and thus it places, both in the community and the prayer of the members, is the same.

Why Azaan is Important

1. Reminder of Prayer Times

This train is a challenge for Muslim people to remember the right time at which they can suitably let others’ existences go. It guides them to take time off and recall their creator.

2. Unity in Faith

When Muslims hear the Azaan, they feel bonded and related to the other 1.8 billion people on this planet who identify as Muslim.

3. Public Declaration of Faith

A clear show of Islamic belief in God is the Azaan. It is another means of preaching one’s faith to others.

4. Spiritual Preparation

The azaan not only serves religious functions by announcing the time of prayers, but it also disrupts the daily routine of the town and calls people to the mosque. The Muslim gets ready to pray by being exposed to the divine feeling of calmness.

How Azaan Affects Daily Life

Divan-e-Azaan is considered to be the king of the call for prayer. It is, in fact, so important that the faithful set time aside daily, plan their activities around the timing of prayer, and thus organize their life around their godly beliefs.

Azaan in Modern Times

Talking about contemporary use of the azaan in the mosque, it doesn’t involve clerics or muezzins staying in the mosque and giving the azaan. Now, loudspeakers have replaced the presence of the Azaan in some of the mosques. It is even possible to have an application on a cellphone or a mobile phone be notified by azaan. At times of prayer, only the words and the significance of Azaan remain unchanged.

Steps to Perform Prayer

1. Prepare

To begin with, ensure you clean your body and wear clean clothing. Select a quiet and out-of-the-way spot in the room. Make sure you are facing the right direction and are in a clean prayer area.

2. Face Mecca

Be in the direction of Mecca, the sacred city. The Qibla tip is actually the direction indicated for praying. If you don’t know the direction, then come up with a sure way, for example, a compass and an app.

3. State Intention

Remember what you have in your heart and that is the prayer you will be performing. Having your attention only, say the intention psychologically. This allows the mind to be fully discoursed on the subject matter of the prayer.

4. Begin with Takbir

Drop to the shoulder, going across to the ear when you say “Allahu Akbar” (God is the Greatest). This is the marking of the prayer starting. The cardinal virtues of the stance should be that the body’s uprightness and the folding of hands over the chest.

5. Recite the Quran

Speak out the opening chapter of the Quran, (Al-Fatiha). Then add the following verses after that you desire. Say with a louder voice and in a slow manner.

6. Bow and Prostrate

When genuflecting, follow it up with “Subhana Rabbiyal Adheem” (Glory to my Lord, the Great). Standing straight back up and then lowering the whole body, and putting your forehead on the floor are the standard motions of prostration.

7. Sit and Recite

After sitting on your knees, and you have said a few short prayers, pause for a while and repeat the prostration. This is the situation that lies between prostrations. A second prostration should be repeated.

8. Final Greetings

Bring prayer to a close, after which turn your head to your right and then to your left, saying “As-salamu alaykum” (Peace be upon you). Then call it a day for the prayer.

The Importance of Prayer in Islam

Prayer is the most revered act in the Islamic religion due to various reasons:

  • It assists the Muslims to keep in view Allah and thereby to be closer to their faith
  • It trains discipline and routine in worship
  • When they go to the mosque and pray, they come together as a community
  • It opens a way to be reflective and to grow on a personal level
  • It is a way of asking for pardon and guidance

Making Up Missed Prayers

Muslims must perform the five daily prayers. Often, however, one may lose one of those prayers. The person has to make up for it when that situation occurs. It is to be noted that this is called a qada prayer in the Islamic legal vocabulary.

Here are simple instructions on how to make up missed prayers:

  • Pray immediately after you recall the missed prayer
  • Offer the omitted prayers as you would usually do
  • State, “I am praying the (name of prayer) prayer you’ve missed.”
  • Pray for the missed ones accordingly if you skipped more than one
  • Remember to not hold up your prayers, keep them short

The most important reasons to make up missed prayers are:

  • It indicates worship of and devotion to God
  • It is a healthy way of life, and it keeps us in practice with prayer
  • It is a gentle reminder of the importance of respecting the prayer time

Remember, it’s always best to pray when it’s supposed to be done. Though if you miss one, don’t be sad. Pray at the earliest possible time you can.

Making up the missed prayers is the way to come closer to Allah. It allows Muslims to continue their obligation to pray even when they are caught up in other activities.Â
