Mawaqif Abu Dhabi Parking: Fees, Hours, SMS and New Signs

9 Min Read

Mawaqif Abu Dhabi parking costs Dh2 an hour in standard bays and Dh3 in premium bays, paid from 8am to midnight and free on Sundays and public holidays, as Abu Dhabi Mobility reports.

On 29 October 2026 we read the Abu Dhabi Mobility pages, The National’s report of 11 September on the new zone signs, a Gulf News guide updated on 7 October and several r/abudhabi threads. Two questions came up most: do the new signs change what you pay, and why are villa streets drawing fines?

The short answers: not yet, and because of permit rules most visitors never read.

Friday is a paid day. Only Sundays and public holidays are free, so a Friday evening in a bay costs the same as a Monday. Ramadan has its own timings: Q Mobility announced separate Darb and Mawaqif fees and timings for Ramadan 2026, and we have not checked them for 2027.

Ways to pay: Darb, TAMM, SMS and machines

Abu Dhabi Mobility lists five ways to pay: cash, the Darb app, a rechargeable card, direct mobile phone payment and the Mawaqif payment machines. Gulf News adds the TAMM app and gives the SMS details.

  • Send the SMS to 3009 from a UAE mobile line, such as Etisalat or du.
  • Use the format plate code, plate number, parking type and hours, with S for standard or P for premium.
  • Gulf News gives AUH5 12345 S 1 as the example for one hour of standard parking.

Pay as soon as you park. A thread on r/abudhabi from April describes a driver fined at 7:02 while the SMS was still going through, and replies say appeals like that rarely succeed.

By our sum, a standard bay at Dh2 an hour reaches the reported Dh15 day price after 7.5 hours, so the day rate pays off from the eighth hour.

Do the new zone signs change what you pay?

No, not yet. Q Mobility, which runs Mawaqif and the Darb toll network, told The National that there is currently “no action required” from customers, and that the signs relate to a future update.

The National reported on 11 September that tariffs, methods and durations stay unchanged until the new system arrives. An official announcement is meant to cover the zone map, payment methods and transition period.

Today you pay by bay colour, not by neighbourhood. The National reports that a ticket stays valid if you move to another sector, as long as you follow the colour rules.

The signs drew a quick reaction on r/abudhabi days earlier, where a poster described what they saw.

“The new signs now clearly show a zone number, which I assume will need to be entered when paying for parking.”
– r/abudhabi, September 2026 (112 upvotes)

That was an assumption, and the operator has not confirmed it. The National adds that zoning could move pricing towards a location-based model like Dubai’s, which is only a possibility. We will update this section when Q Mobility publishes the zone map.

Villa streets: why residents are getting fined

Abu Dhabi Mobility’s rules explain the risk. Villa resident bays carry “Villa Resident Permit Only” signs, and only permit holders may use them all day.

A visitor needs a Villa Visitors Parking Permit and must park correctly before 2am. The villa owner requests it by SMS from a registered number, with up to four numbers allowed. Visitors who are not UAE nationals are reported to pay Dh2 an hour.

Residents on r/abudhabi report a different picture on the ground. Between July and October, posters in Khalifa City and Mohamed Bin Zayed City reported fines of Dh500 and Dh375 for parking outside their own villas.

“Last night, the Mawaqif guy visited our area and proceeded to fine everyone 375aed for parking violations.”
– r/abudhabi, October 2026 (7 upvotes)

Commenters say the fine can be lifted through a grievance filed on TAMM, with a tenancy contract (tawtheeq) as proof, and that renters without one struggle. We found no official fine schedule or enforcement notice, so treat the amounts and the appeal route as user reports.

New paid areas and multi-storey car parks

Paid parking keeps spreading, according to The National. Mussaffah moved to paid parking in three phases from January 2026, covering sectors M1 to M24 and nearly 19,000 spaces. Mohamed Bin Zayed City added sectors ME9 to ME12 and surrounding villa zones from late 2025.

Gulf News lists seven public multi-storey car parks run by the Integrated Transport Centre, with 3,788 spaces in total. Unlike roadside bays, they reportedly charge around the clock, at Dh2 an hour or Dh15 a day.

Gulf News reported permits at Dh1,369 for three months, Dh2,738 for six and Dh5,475 for twelve. Our Darb Abu Dhabi guide covers the toll side of the same operator.

If your car is towed

The official impound area is in Karama and works 24 hours, according to Abu Dhabi Mobility. The page reports a towing fee of Dh500, paid once, plus Dh100 a day for the first month and Dh500 a month after that.

To free the car, bring the owner’s Emirates ID or licence copy and the vehicle ownership card. A car left for six months goes to auction.

Other emirates run different systems. Our guides to Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman parking cover the hours and SMS codes there.
