How to choose a hair salon in Dubai comes down to what can be tested before paying: whether the stylist asks about the hair, what the quote covers, and how the salon handles hygiene and patch tests. Seven checks cover them. Each is a question to send before booking.
- Ask for the same result on hair like yours.
- Expect a consultation before any work starts.
- Get a price for your length and thickness, with what it covers.
- Ask which products will be used and why.
- Ask how tools are cleaned, and how patch tests are handled.
- Ask for a plan for heat, sun and humidity.
- Check distance, opening hours and recent reviews.
We read the Dubai Health Authority’s salon tips as Gulf News reported them, a September 2025 haircare piece in The National and the NHS page on hair dye allergy. We also read August 2026 r/dubai threads on cuts and prices, and the website of Hair Talkz, the only salon we name.
1. Judge the photos against your own hair
Before-and-after pictures show what one head of hair did on one day. Colour history decides whether the result repeats. Ask what the starting colour and hair type were in the picture, and whether the stylist has made the same change on hair like yours.

Lightening dark hair is where the gap shows most. Black or dark brown hair often needs more stages to reach a light shade than fine, light hair does. Earlier colour or heat damage changes the plan. An honest stylist says how many visits it may take.
2. Use the consultation as the test
A consultation should be made of questions. Expect to be asked about colour history, chemical treatments, heat styling and the routine at home. The answers change what is possible, mainly for colour, balayage and smoothing treatments.
One r/dubai commenter in August 2026 asked for exactly that.
“I just need a wash, cut and blow dry with a stylist who can tell me exactly what suits me, but seems everywhere is priced way above that for a pretty average cut.”

By the end of the talk, the steps, the limits, the aftercare and the price should all be clear. If soft natural highlights are requested and a different service is offered without a single question, the consultation has not happened yet.
3. Get the price in full before the appointment
Menus rarely say what a price includes. A colour may or may not cover toning, conditioning and a blow-dry. Long or thick hair can cost more. Ask for a figure for your length and thickness, and for what it covers.
Budgets in Dubai threads vary widely. In August 2026 one r/dubai poster asked for a women’s cut at AED 200 to 300 around DIFC, JLT, Marina or Jebel Ali. Another thread that month discussed barber cuts under AED 35. Those are forum figures, and we found no official price list for haircuts in Dubai.
“Yeah, pricing is not an indication of quality. I learned this the hard way.”

A low quote that later needs correcting costs more than a fair one done properly. Compare what each quote includes before comparing the totals.
4. Ask what will go on your hair
Ask which products the stylist plans to use and why they suit the hair. Smoothing, conditioning and bond treatments do different jobs. Ask what each one changes and how long it lasts. A sensitive scalp or a past reaction belongs in that conversation.
The Dubai Health Authority advises clients to skip unfamiliar hair dye brands and black henna, which may contain harmful additives, according to Gulf News, whose report was last updated on 5 April 2024.
The NHS tells anyone who has reacted to hair dye or a black henna tattoo to try to avoid products that contain PPD.
5. Check hygiene and the patch test
A salon that is happy to talk about cleanliness is usually confident about it. Look for a clean workstation and fresh towels. Ask how reusable tools are disinfected and how single-use items are thrown away.

The same Dubai Health Authority tips ask clients to confirm that the salon follows health and safety rules, and to patch-test dye on a small area of skin first. Clients are told to bring their own tools or make sure the salon’s are sterilised.
Gulf News reported them ahead of Eid Al Fitr, when Dubai Municipality also stepped up inspections of beauty centres.
The NHS advises testing dye on a strand of hair at least 48 hours before use. It says symptoms can take up to 72 hours to appear. That advice is written for dye used at home, so ask the salon how it handles tests before a colour appointment.
6. Plan for Dubai’s heat and humidity
Coloured and heat-styled hair feels the climate more. London hairstylist Limoz Logli, who recently opened a salon in Dubai, told The National in September 2025 that hair dries out faster in the UAE. He said people often keep routines from elsewhere.

Salon founder Maria Dowling recommended anti-frizz products and gentle drying with a microfibre towel. Logli also said the sun can lift tone quickly, often pulling red or orange undertones through coloured hair.
A stylist who colours in Dubai should be able to explain the plan for that.
For regular swimmers, Kristen Ciofu of Hask suggested a clarifying shampoo once a week against chlorine build-up and discolouration. Ask for a home routine that fits how often the hair is washed, swum in or sunned.
7. Weigh distance and reviews
Trims and root touch-ups mean repeat visits, so a salon that is easy to reach tends to win. The r/dubai posters above searched by area, naming DIFC, JLT, Marina and Jebel Ali, and for Metro trips our Dubai Metro fare guide covers nol card prices and zones.
Read recent reviews for patterns rather than star counts. Look for comments on communication, consistency, and whether the final price matched the quote. Check the salon’s own examples of work on hair similar to yours.
For Al Karama, Hair Talkz is one option. Its website lists haircuts and blow-dries, global colour, balayage, highlights, root touch-ups, keratin and smoothing treatments, Olaplex and hair spa services. It gives two addresses: the podium floor of Park Regis Kris Kin Hotel, and Mercure Gold Hotel on Al Mina Road.
Opening hours are 10am to 9pm every day, as read on 30 October 2026. No prices are listed, so message the salon with the hair length before booking.
Questions about how to choose a hair salon in Dubai
How to choose a hair salon in Dubai on a budget?
Ask each salon for a full price for your hair length and compare what the quotes include, not only the totals. A forum poster’s AED 200 to 300 budget for a cut is a reference point rather than a tariff.
Which salon suits thick, dark hair that I want to lighten?
Choose a stylist who has lightened hair like yours and can show it. Ask about colour history, how many visits it may take and what aftercare to expect.
How long before colouring should I do a patch test?
The NHS says to test dye on a strand of hair at least 48 hours before use. Ask the salon for its own testing routine before a colour appointment, because that NHS advice is written for dye used at home.
