Cinenerdle is a daily movie puzzle site, and on 20 October 2026 its front page listed six daily puzzles plus a Battle Royale mode for up to 24 players. The best known of them, Original, gives you 15 tile swaps to find five hidden movies.
That day we opened the Cinenerdle front page and the how-to-play page for four of its modes. We did not play a puzzle through, so this explains the rules and does not offer solving tips or today’s answers. We also did not test access from inside the Gulf; our Roblox status page shows how differently regulators treat online games.
| Mode | What the page says it does | Limit | Average shown on 20 Oct |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original #1448 | Swap tiles to reveal hidden movies | 15 swaps | 12.0 swaps |
| Reversal #R1249 | Swap movies to reveal hidden themes | 15 swaps | 13.1 swaps |
| Logical #L16 | Arrange tiles according to the logic provided | 5 checks | 4.2 checks |

| Critical #C391 | Guess the film from its “Critical” reception | 20 points, 1 off per wrong guess | 8.5 score |
| Burgle #580 | Burgle the word vault using movie plot descriptions | Not read | 3.8 attempts |
Cinenerdle: what it is and the daily puzzles
The site’s header offers Puzzles, Battle and Trivia, and a footer credit says it uses the TMDb API. A new puzzle appears for each mode every day, with an archive and a Create tab for community puzzles that carry star ratings.
The averages in the table are the ones the page showed for that day’s puzzle, so they will change. Burgle is credited on the page to thedailyburgle.app, which suggests it comes from a partner site, although we did not confirm the arrangement.
Cinenerdle Original: swap tiles to find five movies
Original is the core tile-swap puzzle. The grid holds 16 tiles in the example on the how-to-play page, and each of five movies owns four tiles: actors, characters, plot points or other clues.
- Players swap tiles until four belonging to one movie sit together in a row or column. The tiles then change colour and the title appears.
- Yellow tiles mean three tiles that belong together are lined up, and the fourth is somewhere else in the grid.
- Once four movies are found, a hidden fifth remains. Its four tiles come from each of the other four movies, and it is always green.
- The game allows 15 swaps and asks for as few as possible.
The page’s own hint is that when the green movie is found first, the other four must cross it. That is the only strategy we state, because it is the site’s own.
Reversal, Logical and Assemble: how the other modes work
Reversal flips the idea. Players swap movies, not clues, to uncover five hidden themes with four films each, such as a shared director, cast member or setting. It uses the same yellow and green signals and the same 15 swaps.
Logical sets a topic, for example Pixar characters, and a list of rules about rows, columns and release dates. The page says there is one possible solution, players get 5 checks, and each check shows green tiles in the correct place and ticks beside rules the grid already follows. It also claims every puzzle can be solved in one check without guessing.
Assemble is a score game. Each criteria card, covering cast and crew, genre, decade, title rules or Oscar winners, has three uses, and each player crafts one card of their own first.
- Points for a movie that triggers one, two, three, four or five cards are 10, 28, 52, 80 and 112.
- A movie cannot be played twice, only one movie per franchise counts, and a movie that matches no card scores nothing.
- The run ends when every card is out of uses or on Finish, and the best score is kept.
Critical and Trivia: scores, reveals and live quizzes
Critical has no how-to-play page of its own, so what follows comes from the puzzle page itself. It opens at a score of 20 out of 20, takes 1 point off for each incorrect guess, and hides the film behind Reveal buttons for its worldwide box office, IMDb rating, Rotten Tomatoes critic and audience scores, a Letterboxd rating curve and a set of user reviews.
Each Reveal button carries a number from 1 to 7 that we read as its point cost, and some review text is scrambled. We did not press any of them. The page also prints the date its ratings data was collected, 12 October 2026 on the puzzle we opened.
The Trivia tab, titled Live Movie Trivia, describes scheduled live quizzes with prizes, a lobby and a live leaderboard, and says past quizzes can be replayed from an archive. It showed no event scheduled on 20 October. The archive listed four quizzes: “Alien Encounters… of the Film Kind” with 14 questions in about 15 minutes and 113 played live, plus “Movies of 2025”, “Pixar” and “Spider-Man”, each marked Beta Test, with 20, 20 and 16 questions.
Battle mode and community puzzles
The front page advertises Battle Royale, where players compete against up to 24 others by linking movies, and a head-to-head option against players and friends. A Polygon feature, which our copy did not date, described an older two-player battle where each person links movies through cast and crew.
That feature described a “Battle 2.0” overhaul with battle kits of 20 slots, each holding a win condition, lifelines or key items, and it said games usually took about five to ten minutes. We could not confirm that those kit rules still apply to the 24-player mode.
Cinenerdle 2 and Cine2Nerdle: the name question
Older write-ups used the name Cine2Nerdle, which is where the Cinenerdle 2 label comes from. A May 2023 Substack post by T. Campbell, which covers Cine2Nerdle’s basics, called it the sequel to an earlier CineNerdle jigsaw built from movie frames, and said both came from Nilanth Yogadasan.
When we opened cinenerdle2.app on 20 October 2026 it landed on cinenerdle.app, and the site now calls itself CineNerdle. So the two searches lead to one site today, with the tile-swap game as its Original mode.
What we could not confirm
Several points stay open after our reading, because the site loads its content in the browser and we did not play through a puzzle.
- The rules of Burgle, and the exact point costs behind Critical’s Reveal buttons.
- Whether the site is reachable from inside the Gulf; we did not test it.
- What the “Go ad-free” option costs.
- Who runs the site today; the footer names only CineNerdle.
- Whether Polygon’s battle kits still exist in Battle Royale.
Quick answers on Cinenerdle
What is Cinenerdle?
A daily movie puzzle site built on TMDb data. On 20 October 2026 it listed six daily puzzles, Original, Reversal, Logical, Assemble, Critical and Burgle, plus a Battle Royale mode.
How many swaps do you get in Cinenerdle?
15 in Original and Reversal, according to the site’s how-to-play pages. Logical gives 5 checks instead.
Is Cinenerdle 2 a different game?
Not today. Older articles call it Cine2Nerdle, but cinenerdle2.app now redirects to cinenerdle.app.
How does Cinenerdle battle mode work?
Players link movies through shared cast and crew. The front page describes a Battle Royale for up to 24 players, and an older Polygon feature described a two-player version with battle kits.
We read these pages on 20 October 2026 and will update the table if the site changes its modes.
