About this calculator
This Salik calculator adds up your Dubai toll cost for a month. A crossing costs AED 6.30 at peak and AED 4.20 off-peak since 5% VAT was added on 1 June 2026, and Sunday has a flat AED 4.20. Enter how many times a month you pass a gate in each period, and it returns the monthly and yearly cost.
Salik rates used in the calculator
The rates are the ones in our Salik charges guide, where we show which source gave which figure.
| When | Hours | Before VAT | With 5% VAT |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday to Saturday, peak | 06:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 20:00 | AED 6 | AED 6.30 |
| Monday to Saturday, off-peak | 10:00 to 16:00 and 20:00 to 01:00 | AED 4 | AED 4.20 |
| Sunday | 06:00 to 01:00, one flat rate | AED 4 | AED 4.20 |
| Every day, free window | 01:00 to 06:00 | No tariff | No tariff |
- Count your peak crossings in a month and multiply by AED 6.30.
- Count your off-peak crossings and multiply by AED 4.20.
- Count your Sunday crossings and multiply by AED 4.20.
- Leave the 01:00 to 06:00 crossings at zero cost.
- Add the three results for the monthly total, and multiply by 12 for a yearly estimate.
Salik cost worked examples
These use the rates above. They are our arithmetic, not a bill.
| Pattern | Peak | Off-peak | Sunday | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Commuter: 2 peak gates a day, 22 working days | 44 | 0 | 0 | AED 277.20 |
| One peak and one off-peak gate a day, 22 days | 22 | 22 | 0 | AED 231.00 |
| Off-peak driver: 30 crossings a month | 0 | 30 | 0 | AED 126.00 |
| Sunday driver: 8 crossings | 0 | 0 | 8 | AED 33.60 |
| Heavy use: 44 peak, 20 off-peak, 8 Sunday | 44 | 20 | 8 | AED 394.80 |
How timing changes the bill
Off-peak and Sunday crossings cost AED 2.10 less than a peak crossing. Moving one daily crossing from a peak window to the off-peak window saves about AED 46 over 22 working days, by our arithmetic. The 01:00 to 06:00 window is free for everyone, though few trips fit it.
Assumptions this calculator makes
- One charge per gate. Every crossing counts as a separate charge. One reference source says passing both Al Mamzar gates, or both Al Safa gates, in the same direction within an hour is charged once. We did not confirm that on an official page, so enter such a pair as one crossing if it applies to you.
- Fixed rates. The tariff can change. Salik’s own site refused our automated requests, so we could not read it.
- Ramadan and holidays. News reports describe a different Ramadan schedule, and no separate public holiday schedule was found. Treat those days as estimates.
- Not included. Tag purchase, account top-up fees and fines.
How to pay less Salik, and what to do about a fine
The tariff has two prices on Monday to Saturday, and the gap is AED 2.10 a crossing with VAT. Whether it matters depends on how many gates you pass in the peak windows.
What shifting a crossing is worth
| Crossings moved from peak to off-peak | Monthly cost at peak | Monthly cost off-peak | Saved a month | Saved a year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 a working day | AED 138.60 | AED 92.40 | AED 46.20 | AED 554.40 |
| 2 a working day | AED 277.20 | AED 184.80 | AED 92.40 | AED 1,108.80 |
| 3 a working day | AED 415.80 | AED 277.20 | AED 138.60 | AED 1,663.20 |
| 4 a working day | AED 554.40 | AED 369.60 | AED 184.80 | AED 2,217.60 |
These assume 22 working days a month. The saving is the AED 2.10 gap times the crossings you move. Only the windows count: peak is 06:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 20:00, and off-peak is 10:00 to 16:00 and 20:00 to 01:00. Passing a gate between 01:00 and 06:00 is free, and Sunday has one flat rate of AED 4.20.
- List the gates you pass and the times, for one normal week.
- Mark which crossings fall in the peak windows.
- Ask whether any can move by a few minutes into an off-peak window. A return trip at 20:05 instead of 19:55 changes the price.
- Enter both versions in the calculator and compare.
Fines and how to avoid them
The Dubai portal says a vehicle with no tag, or with too little balance that is not topped up within five days, may be fined, and it gives no amounts. The figures below come from Salik’s terms of 28 June 2024 as Gulf News reported them, and we could not check whether they changed after the 2026 VAT change.
| Situation | Fine reported in the 2024 terms |
|---|---|
| Insufficient balance | AED 50, plus AED 50 for each additional day, after five working days to top up |
| No registered tag | AED 100 on the first crossing after the ten-working-day window, AED 200 on the second, AED 400 on each after |
| Yearly cap | AED 10,000 a vehicle each calendar year |
| Disputing a fine | Only if it was posted to the traffic file within 13 months |
- Keep a balance above your expected weekly crossings, so a long trip never empties it.
- Check the balance before a day with several gates, such as an airport run.
- If you receive a fine, look at the date and the crossing it names and compare them with your own records.
- Dispute within the 13-month window the terms describe. Salik’s own site refused our automated requests, so we could not read its current dispute steps.
Driving on to Abu Dhabi as well? Its six Darb gates charge a flat AED 4. Our Darb Abu Dhabi guide covers the fees and fines there.
