Most couples do not walk into a fertility clinic the moment they decide to start a family. That is completely normal. The usual path involves trying on their own for a while, hoping things will happen naturally, and pushing the idea of getting help to a later date, sometimes a much later date.

There is nothing wrong with that approach, but there is a point at which waiting stops being patient and starts working against you, and that line is different depending on age, health history, and a few other factors worth understanding.

The question of timing is one that gets more complicated the longer people sit with it. And in a city like Dubai, where a significant portion of the population is either expat or international, there is sometimes an added layer of hesitation whether to pursue something here or wait until a trip home, whether the system is easy to access, and whether the process will feel unfamiliar. Those are real concerns, and they are worth addressing alongside the medical ones.

The Time-Based Guidelines That Actually Matter

The most widely used clinical guideline is straightforward: if a couple under 35 has been trying to conceive for 12 months without success, a fertility evaluation is recommended. For women over 35, that window shortens to six months. And for women over 40, most fertility specialists in Dubai would say a few months of trying is sufficient before a consultation makes sense, given that ovarian reserve and egg quality decline more sharply after that age.

These are not arbitrary cut-offs. They reflect what research shows about natural conception rates across different age groups and how quickly the window for intervention narrows if something is affecting fertility. People miss this sometimes: a 12-month wait is not a default rule for everyone, it is specifically for women under 35 who have no known risk factors and regular cycles. If anything in that picture is different, the threshold changes.

There are also situations where a couple does not need to wait at all before seeing a fertility doctor in Dubai. A history of conditions like PCOS, endometriosis, thyroid disorders, or recurrent miscarriage is a clear signal to get evaluated before months pass. The same applies if a woman has irregular or absent periods, or if a man has any known issues with sperm count or quality from a previous test. In those cases, waiting serves no purpose and may narrow the options for treatment.

For couples where the woman has had prior pelvic surgery, a previous ectopic pregnancy, or any condition that could have affected the fallopian tubes, an early evaluation is worth having simply for the information it provides, regardless of whether conception has been attempted.

When the Concern Is Not Infertility But Something Else

This comes up more often than expected: couples who are not yet trying to conceive but have questions about their fertility potential, or women who want to understand their ovarian reserve before making decisions about timing. These are legitimate reasons to see a fertility specialist, and the consultation does not commit anyone to treatment.

A basic assessment, including hormone blood tests, an antral follicle count via ultrasound, and a semen analysis for the male partner, gives a clear picture of where things stand and whether there is anything worth addressing proactively. For women in their early to mid-thirties who are planning to delay pregnancy for a few more years, this kind of assessment can inform whether egg freezing is worth considering as a precaution.

There is also the situation of couples who have had a pregnancy but experienced recurrent miscarriage, generally defined as two or more consecutive losses. This is a separate issue from difficulty conceiving, and it has its own range of causes, from chromosomal factors to uterine anatomy to clotting disorders, that a fertility specialist is well placed to investigate. Waiting through more losses to see if things resolve on their own is not a sound approach.

It is worth noting that male factor infertility accounts for a meaningful proportion of fertility challenges overall. A semen analysis is a simple test, and yet it is the one that gets delayed most often. Couples often go through months of female-focused investigations before a semen analysis is done, when it could have been ordered from the outset.
