Normally Ajman is famous for coastal and desert destinations. If you have ever wished that it had a mountain place. This is it. The village of Masfout is where you could escape the city heat and breathe mountain air. 

Masfout is a village between mountain cliffs. It has green farms and mountain charm. You can only go here through Ajman. Recently, it has received the title of world’s best tourist village by the United Nations. 

What Makes Masfout Village Special?

It is a mountain town in the Hajar Mountains. Coming here is an experience in itself. You drive through deserts and valleys before coming here. From Ajman or Dubai, this place is a 1.5-hour drive by car. You can use the Sharjah-Kalba road, but you can come here only by passing through Ajman. The Hatta route is fast and cheap. Non GCC nationals may avoid the Hatta route. As it crosses the Oman checkpoint which is not open for non GCC nationals.

Travel here during the day because the road is tricky. It has lots of twists and turns. When you reach the base after crossing deserts, the ground will be rocky and green. Going to the village drive becomes smooth and scenic. It’s a perfect long-drive route. 

What to Do When You Arrive?

This village is not a regular tourist spot. It is a quiet retreat. There are mountains all around. Date palms and simple homes add to its simple beauty. This is the countryside far away from city life. A perfect place to relax!

The weather is cool here. Hiking can still make you sweat badly. So go hiking early in the morning or before sunset.

The mountain fort on the hill overlooking the town is a must-watch. This historic fort is 19th-century construction. It was built to protect local farmers. Now it is one of the best viewpoints in Masfout. 

Take a short climb and see the valleys and mountains all around. Most social media people take perfect drone shots and wide-angle photographs from here.

The valleys around the village have occasional water pools. These get filled during rains. Locals come here for family picnics. The best way to explore the wadis is by being adventurous. The UAE is hot, and Masfout has lower degrees. The best time is from October to April. This is the time when the weather is bearable even in the daytime. 

In winters, you will need cozy clothes. A little miracle within Ajman. The weather is better during summers but still tiring for hiking.

You will not find luxury hotels there. In the near future some development is expected. For now there are small guest lodges and farms. This accommodation gives you an authentic experience of the place. 

If you want, you can stay overnight in Ajman city or Hatta. Masfout can be your day trip. Basic food options are available. Few small restaurants serve Arabic food. You can even bring your food and party kit. 

Some Realistic Travel Tips

  • Fill-up your car.  When you leave the highway, there are not many petrol stations on the way. 
  • Wear proper shoes. Not very high end but comfortable.
  • Hikers should carry their snacks and water bottle.
  • Direct sunlight in mountains can damage the skin. Wear sunscreen. 
  • Leave your mobile away. There can be signal problems, but you are there to escape all this. 
  • You need to dress respectfully according to local culture. 
  • Don’t throw garbage. Keep the place clean for future tourists. 

Plan a Day Trip

You can wisely plan your day trip to the village. Leave Ajman at 7 in the morning. You will be in Masfout by 9 o’clock. Have a tea and snack and get prepared for a hike. By 1 in the afternoon, have a picnic under some shaded area.

Enjoy and explore village views in the afternoon. Take some beautiful sunset pictures and drive back to the city by 6 o’clock. If you want to stay, check into a local guesthouse.
